About Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a a disorder of the brain and is one of the most common neurological disorders.Physicians at The Neuroscience Institute’s Cincinnati Epilepsy Center treat hundreds of patients annually and are expert at the diagnosis and treatment of the disorder.
Epileptic seizures may be related to a brain injury; a stroke or tumor; or even a family tendency. For more than half of people affected, the cause of epilepsy is unknown. In general, a diagnosis of epilepsy indicates nothing about the cause or severity of a person’s seizures. Epileptic seizures are often grouped into these categories: generalized seizures, and partial seizures (the most common of which are complex partial seizures). Psychogenic seizures are also common but are not epileptic, although they can mimic epileptic seizures and require advanced diagnostic evaluation.
The National Association of Epilepsy Centers has given The Neuroscience Institute’s Cincinnati Epilepsy Center its level IV rating, this highest rating for epilepsy care. TNI’s Epilepsy Center is the only level IV-rated center in the region. The center provides sophisticated evaluation, and coordinated medical and surgical treatment of epilepsy. The center’s seven-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit is the only one of its kind in Southwest Ohio. The unit combines expert neurological, neuropsychological and neurosurgical examination with 24-hour video recordings and EEG monitoring to discover the origin of seizures.
Epilepsy experts at the Cincinnati Epilepsy Center remain in the forefront of research and clinical trials into the causes of and new treatments for epilepsy. Once a patient is diagnosed and a treatment plan begins, The Neuroscience Institute also provides exceptional follow-up care to patients and their families.
